I went down to the ornamental gardens, across from the Arboretum, to try and get a picture of a bee. There were plenty of bees there and I took hundreds of pictures, but it’s not easy to get a good picture of a bee. Not for me anyway. Most of the time some tiny flower petal is in focus and the stupid bee isn’t.
This one’s ok. I like how you can see the pollen all over his legs.

With these kids of images, the depth of field is often absurdly small. I often find that the best approach with insects is to use a pretty wide lens (35mm or so) and try to frame the shot to exclude anything else from the near background.
The detail on the pollen and wings here are both quite good.
OK? This is freakin’ amazing. He’s all dusty with pollen. So busy. This picture actually choked me up and made me teary for some reason. I’m VERY fond of bees. Being a bee lady one day is on my to-do list.
The world is so infinitely small when you get right down to it.
It’s a work of art Robin.
XUP, I hope you get to be a bee lady soon.
Zoom, Milan, thanks :)
I had the EXACT same reaction at XUP!
I’ve seen TONS of your images that I want to get for people as gifts Robin…I just need money! But this one I really really want for ME.
I know a bee charmer XUP, her name is FErn and she grew up on an apiary. She can tell what kind of nectar makes any honey she tastes and construction crews that disturbed hives used to call her up to go lead them away. I miss Fern – she’s my version of your your Cheez Whiz friend.
Mudmama, I wasn’t sure if this would be big enough for any size of print, because it is a small crop from a much larger photo frame. So I put it up on Imagekind to find out. It turns out that it could be printed at 8″ x 8″.
(I’m really glad you like it!)
