This statue of an Indian scout is in Major’s Hill Park. It used to be part of the grouping on Nepean Point that depicts Champlain and the astrolabe, but some native people led by Ovide Mercredi were concerned that the scout appeared in a subservient role to the mighty Champlain. Therefore the scout was taken out of the group and put by himself, eliminating from history the fact that none of the white explorers would have lasted a week in the new world without the help of the native people.

When I was researching this item I was surprised to learn that it was native people who raised the objection. I thought it had “guilt-ridden white guys” written all over it. But according to this article, I was mistaken. Anyway it’s a good statue.
