Took a walk over to Westboro.

No flyers

My neighbours have come to their senses and allowed me to post “No Flyers Please” signs on their mailboxes.

Actually I didn’t even ask them. I just got tired of picking their flyers up off the ground.

Apt. 2 is being renovated and eventually my landlord will be moving in. He has to because he used “Needs apartment for own use” as grounds to evict the previous tenant. He does get some mail here, such as the hydro bill and my rent cheque. When the flyers pile up enough he tosses them on the ground.

My other neighbour, #3, doesn’t really live here either. Anyway she doesn’t think she does. #3 is a recent graduate who has a job with the government. Every Friday after work she drives to Montreal to be with her husband for the weekend.

Here’s something about #3 to demonstrate that although she has an apartment and a job in Ottawa, she doesn’t really live here: When the new phone books came, I helpfully tossed a set onto her landing. That was a couple of weeks ago. It’s still there.

I know she has a phone. Wouldn’t you want a phone book? Wouldn’t you get tired of stepping over it every time you went in and out? But I guess when you don’t really live where you’re living, a little thing like a phone book just isn’t on your radar.

When the flyers pile up enough she tosses them on the ground. But not any more! Those “No flyers please” signs really work.

Online dating experiment

Not my experiment. This is from an article in today’s Toronto Star. You can see the whole article here if you want.

In short, this guy posted some fake profiles on Lava Life and recorded the responses.

He posted three profiles: One using a photo of supermodel Heidi Klum (but not a glamour shot), one using an average-looking woman’s photo, and one using the photo of a man who resembles a younger Johnny Depp. For a control group he used himself, an average-looking pleasant-enough guy in his mid-twenties.

As Heidi Klum he got 969 greetings in 24 hours.

As the average-looking woman he got 313 greetings in 24 hours.

As “Johnny Depp” he got 15 greetings in 24 hours.

As himself he got 30 greetings in a year.

Sweet Potato Café

The cutest café in town is for sale. I don’t know how much it costs. It’s on LeBreton St.

Not much happened on my walk to Westboro. I was struck by how out of place this building looks, and how much it resembles a chess piece. It could be a bishop or a queen swooping in for the kill. Checkmate!

I picked up a few things at Loblaw’s and took the #2 bus back. I don’t usually ride the bus much but this is such a cold winter… Anyway I kind of like riding the bus. You get a different view of people and places.

More online dating

I have a profile online at a dating site. I’m not very serious about it. Most of the time it’s hidden, but a couple of weeks ago I updated it and unhid it.

Two women have emailed me in those couple of weeks. They are both older than I am, and their pictures aren’t specially appealing, so I didn’t respond. Proving that I’m about as shallow and appearance-oriented as everybody else. Plus I thought Heidi Klum might drop me a line.

I guess I’ll be spending Valentine’s Day by myself. (Sob) ;)

The end

When I got home I made a sandwich and ate it. It was cheese, tomato, and onion on a toasted sesame bagel with dijon mustard.

I liked it so much that when I had finished eating it, I made another one. Life is good!
