That was a first. But I was really quite dismayed by the recent “Quebecois nation” nonsense, and the fact that almost everybody in Parliament bought into it, including Paul Dewar. It makes me wonder if the NDP is really any better than the rest.

The following 16 MPs voted against declaring the French Canadians to be a nation: Navdeep Bains (L), Don Bell (L), Raymond Chan (PC), Joe Comuzzi (L), Ken Dryden (L), Hedy Fry (L), Jim Karygiannis (L), Diane Marleau (L), Bill Matthews (L), Maria Minna (L), Dan McTeague (L), Scott Simms (L), Paul Steckle (L), Andrew Telegdi (L), Garth Turner (Ind), and Joe Volpe (L).

Not a single NDPer. Conservative Raymond Chan had the guts to resign over it.

Went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride

I think tossing all those bones to Quebec to try and make them stay in Canada is just degrading. It’s like if you’re with a woman you love and she says, “Baby, buy me that diamond ring and I’ll stay with you,” and then one week later she says “Baby, why don’t you buy me a Cadillac car? Then I’ll stay with you.” When that happens it’s time to let her go. I learned this from listening to blues music.

I guess you could try saying “Sweetheart, you are a nation within this marriage,” if you were completely nuts.

Back to the NDP

As for the NDP being no better than the others, I was kind of thinking that anyway. Traditionally they have been the party that represents labour, but I’m not sure if I relate that much any more to what is known as labour. I think labour is a bunch of auto workers in Oshawa spending their lives on the assembly line putting together cars for big bucks. It’s not farmers and shoemakers, or computer programmers and technical writers.

The auto worker way of life is based on wasted resources, ugly cities, pollution, and global warming. Those aren’t my people. I ride a bike, I’m a member of Vrtucar. And besides, the auto unions don’t even support the NDP anymore. So who does?

I love Tommy Douglas and everything he stood for, and this could make my dad turn over in his grave, but I think the NDP’s time has passed.

The Greens

I’m leaning toward the Greens. I was happy to see that Elizabeth May made such a strong showing in the recent by-election in London, coming in second in a riding that has never elected anyone who wasn’t a Liberal. It won’t be long before they win their first seat and then their momentum will start to build.

Sorry Paul Dewar but I think I’m going to have to vote Green next time.

As for the Liberals

Whoever wins the Liberal leadership will probably become Prime Minister sooner or later, so that’s why I’m interested in their leadership race.

I’m for Bob Rae. He’s smarter and more experienced than the rest, and for me, being a former Ontario NDP leader is a big plus. I’d feel a lot better having him as Prime Minister than any of those other guys. There is no doubt that it would be ironic, but I think it would be for the best.
