That’s my bike there. I’m sure you were wondering how it was working out for winter riding. I’m pleased to report that the 8-speed internal gears work in any weather, no matter how cold; they don’t get jammed up with ice and refuse to shift like derailleurs do. And the step-through frame (yes that’s a girl’s frame) lets me get on it easily, no matter how many pairs of pants I’m wearing.
It’s a Specialized Globe from Tommy & Lefevbre. It wasn’t cheap but it was worth it.

Nice post Robin.
My main winter bike has a Shimano 7-speed hub, and these internal hubs, even the old 3-speeds, rock in the winter for the reasons you mention. If you ever want to learn how to fix your bike(s) come to the re-Cycles shop, where we help folks keep their bikes functioning, even through the winter. (The preceeding was a non-paid and hopefully not regarded as commercial spam non-advertisement.)
