Heron

I saw this heron fishing along the bank of the Ottawa River. I think it’s a great blue heron, although it isn’t blue at all. It’s grey with rusty overtones.

Then it took off…

It just flew down the bank a little way, to get away from me and my ominous camera clicking.

I love seeing wild things in the city.

So beautiful. It looks like he/she is pointing its toes.

I just feel so honoured when I see a heron up close.
I used to feel that way about Canada Geese too, but that’s kind of worn off!
I still like to see the geese when they’re flying on their great migrations.

Well, if I was the heron and I sensed someone was taking my pictures without my permission then I would definitely fly away too. :D

    Nice photos by the way.

    Hi Catherine,
On the subject of taking people’s pictures without permission — You don’t need permission to take someone’s picture in a public place. You do if you’re going to use the picture for profit, like in an ad. Blogs are a grey area I guess. (Like herons.)

I do take pictures of people on the street but I try to be discreet about it. I don’t want my subjects posing for me, and I also don’t want them chasing me down the street with a rock.

Herons are pretty relaxed really. As you point out, they just fly away if they don’t like it.
