Is this really a heron? I saw it on the canal near Bank Street.
It’s probably a heron. Ottawa has a street named after herons, so most likely they’re common on the canal. But I hope you’ll feel free to set me straight if it isn’t.
I haven’t posted a new movie review since Sept. 16, so I’m declaring the Movies part of this blog on hiatus. As a parting shot I’ve managed mini-reviews of the late Paul Newman’s classic early films Hombre and Hud. Come on over.

Hi Robin,
That’s for sure a heron – Great Blue, if I’m not mistaken. Maybe it’s the same one I see over on the Ottawa River.
Hunting on the canal right now is probably a bit like shooting fish in a, well, a drained canal.
Megan.
Hi Megan,
Good to know that it really is a heron. Thanks!
It definitely looks like a heron to me.
Beautiful animals.
Pretty shot. They’re a fairly rare sight.
Hi Pearl. I’ve seen groups of them among the reeds on the Rideau river at Billings bridge, but this one seems to be on its own on the canal. It’s very conspicuous there. As megan says, I guess there’s plenty to eat in the canal when the water level is so low.
I think it’s a chicken.
Are you sure it isn’t the stork?
Zoom’s stork?
You said it, not me!
It is a great, not just good, blue heron. It is also a great picture of a great blue heron.
If you ever get down to the Niagara area we have lots of them hanging out around here eating all the fish and frogs they can find.
We see them all the time in Arkansas. In fact, twice within the last couple of weeks we’ve been within 30 feet or so of one before it flew off. Both times were on a jetty in Lake Dardanelle that we take a walk on. I’ve got some pictures from the first time, but they are still on the memory card in the camera. The most recent was yesterday, but I didn’t have the camera with me.
