I read the news today, oh boy…
This building was torn down today.

Here’s another shot of it.

    Why was it torn down?

Oh, just normal progress. Put up a big building. No big deal really, except that the old building had a lot of character and I’m pretty sure the new one won’t.

I worked here on and off between 2002-2006 for the small information management firm that was occupying most of the second floor from (iirc) the mid-1980s until the end.

The owner (a local real estate mogul) was actually trying to sell it to developers for years, and only recently managed to do so.

The lower shop was once occupied by a hobby store, which then was replaced by The Roasted Cherry (http://www.roastedcherry.com/), which was an interesting coffee house project intended to engage young people in entrepreneurship. They moved out only in the last two years or so. I wonder what became of all the folks I met who worked there over the years…

Thanks for the pictures. I am the owner of the small information management firm that occupied 2/3 of the 2nd floor until recently (and had the “corner” office).

Original, the second floor consisted of three apartments with one having a staircase to the store below. We occupied “apartments #1 & #2″.

I think that this picture was taken well before 2000, or prior. “Cafe Deluxe” replaced the “HobbyShop” which took up the whole ground floor. The ground floor was then divided into two halves, with nail salon beside the coffee shop. The Nail salon was forced to leave because of the fumes of the chemicals that they were using. It was then replaced by the “Smoke Shop”. The “Roasted Cherry” coffee shop followed Cafe Deluxe.

When Slater was made a one-way street all the bus traffic from Albert, going east, went right past the office with as result that we had to close and seal all the windows on Slater and O’Connor because of the intense diesel fumes.

Jake and Andrew, thanks for all the info.
Jake, the pictures were taken on March 17, 2009, by me :)
