Powwow

National Aboriginal Day. These dancers were at a powwow in that park near Carling and Preston. I don’t know the name of it. Last week there was a carnival there. (June 27: It’s Queen Julianna Park.)

I found that I had to bleed most of the colour out of these pictures so I could see the faces of the dancers. Sometimes colour is so overwhelming that it gets in the way of seeing anything else. (This isn’t meant as a metaphor. Just a photo note.)

It worked beautifully. I was wondering till I got to the print if you were going for a sort of sepia/ tintype look but it sure works with these subjects.

I knew the sepia look could suggest that I consider native dancers to be something out of the past. Which I don’t actually think — I love watching the dancers.

Sometimes it’s very complicated to maneuver the minefield of meanings that people naturally attach to everything. Like I said, I was just trying to see the faces of the dancers. I’m glad to hear that you think it worked.

The processing is perfect regardless if the meanings are intentional or not. It makes you think and that’s what makes a photo more than a mere snapshot.
