Remembrance day

It was raining on remembrance day so I watched it on TV. Today I went down to see what was left.

I like how people toss their poppies on the tomb of the unknown soldier so they look like drops of blood. Unfortunately some people had put other stuff on there too, so the purity of the gesture was lost. I took a picture of these few discarded poppies on the steps. I think they look as good as drops of blood should look. Those other red things are rose petals.

Then I walked home and took pictures. I decided to focus on the erotic side of the statues on Parliament Hill. Love and death.

There is very little that is erotic about the statues on Parliament Hill. But how about this guy Alexander Mackenzie? What’s with the naked boy draped across his plinth? Does Stephen Harper know about this?

Then there are these depictions of Upper Canada (that’s us) and Lower Canada (Quebec), waiting languidly for the Act of Union.

Lower Canada

I think we’re a lot cuter than Lower Canada.

On a sterner note, I took a look at the statues in front of the Supreme Court. Here is Iustitia (Justice):

And Veritas (Truth):

I don’t think they are erotic but they are statues of beautiful women.

Back at my street corner I noticed the pylons had been painted. They look pretty nice, all bright yellow and everything. It’s almost enough to make you forget about the planters they have on the other side of Somerset, and the fact that we’ve still got the same old rusty chain.

    Truth looks kind of haughty.

    Hi

I just wanted to let you know that you made a mistake in your spelling.

“On a sterner note, I took a look at the statues in front of the Supreme Court. Here is Iustitia (Justice)”

    Its actually… IVSTITA

    Cheers

    Dude,
I was just there and have my own photograph. Firstly, “IVSTITIA” is carved clearly into the stone beneath the lady. Secondly, “Iustitia” and “Ivstitia” are the same spelling – there was no “U” in the Roman alphabet, but the “u” is the commonly accepted spelling. And thirdly, if we want to get picky, we should say either “IUSTITIA” or “iustitia” as it’s not proper to capitalize the first letter.

No, I don’t know you – I came across your blog while googling something.
    Cheers

    Hi Grrl,
Yup, that’s what I said. I took Latin in junior high. Thanks for stopping by!
