Skaters from the footbridge

I often take a picture from the middle of the so-called Corktown footbridge, aka Somerset footbridge, looking north toward Chateau Laurier and the DND. Here are some more shots from the footbridge, taken in different seasons:

This is Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s 1565 painting Winter Landscape with a Bird Trap.

Winter Landscape with a Bird Trap

Looking at this painting always reminds me that nothing much has changed, at least when it comes to skating and goofing around on the ice. This is reprinted from my blog entry Skaters, posted on January 28th, 2007.

I’ve found a version of that painting on the web with a magnifying viewer, so you can get a closer look. It’s cool. Here it is: http://www.artchive.com/artchive/B/bruegel/bird_trap.jpg.html. Notice that some people in the painting are playing what appears to be hockey.

It’s a very pleasant bridge, and today’s photo is excellent.

Nicely captured! The colour tone in the photo and the framing are great.

That could be a postcard. And funny how houses used to be right along the water.
