Thrift

This is on the facade of the old Bank of Montreal building at Wellington and O’Connor. It says it depicts “thrift,” but I don’t really get it. I like it though.

Above the door it has these two Indians contemplating a beaver. I think the owl is a later addition meant to scare away pigeons. “Concordia Salus” means “Salvation through harmony.”

    I’m not sure about the Thrift either but I do love to find these buildings where they decided to spend a bit of time effort and money on beauty instead of just utility.

    Me too. They don’t seem to have done much of it since the thirties.
