How do you keep your batteries warm when you’re shooting outside for an extended time? Surprisingly that’s not meant as a double entendre.

Hi Gabriel. In winter I tend to use a Canon superzoom, which can go in my coat pocket or inside my coat in between shots. Even so I usually go through a couple of sets of batteries in a day.

Do you have any tricks you use?

Morty likes to eat those. The weeds, not the cameras or batteries.

Is there anything that Morty doesn’t like to eat?

Wow! I admire the focus, can never achieve that.

The only way I’ve been able to keep my batteries from losing their charge in cold weather is keeping them next to one of those little packets meant to keep your hands and feet warm… you bend them in half and the chemicals keep the batteries/genitals/general extremities toasty for up to an hour. I have some laying around, but I can’t find them. When I get a brand name I’ll let you know, but you can get them at most general stores.

…I’ve been out shooting with my SLR’s in the distant past and had the film freeze in the camera, but I never thought about taping one of the chemical things to the camera back. The heat might’ve screwed up the film as well, but I wonder if it’d keep the batteries fresh in a digital…

This didn’t look like a struggle through the snow last year; but it does today. I really like this photo.
