300 (2007)
April 14th, 2007

I liked this for a while, but I got tired of it about a third of the way through. It taps into the same vein as a lot of other adolescent pleasures, such as the sword-and-sandal epics from my childhood - The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Helen of Troy, and Spartacus. It’s similar to other comic-book movies like Superman and Spiderman (but not as clever or as subtle), and it has something in common with all sports and war movies. It even reminds me of Homer’s Iliad.
What it has going is the appeal of fascism and xenophobia. Might makes right, and we are the mighty. We’re strong and brave and good, and you’re a bunch of effete non-white heathen homosexuals. So die!
Although it is visually innovative, this is a very bad movie. It is meant for the ubiquitous video game demographic and no one else. Boring and relentless, the movie only sounds one note: We fight! We die! We are Sparta!
I sat through the whole thing. I did it for you so you won’t have to. Do not go to this movie.
