This is a retro Western with excellent acting from its leads, Christian Bale and Russell Crowe, and a straight-ahead morality play of a story. I liked it quite a bit.
I also watched the 1957 original, with Glenn Ford and Van Heflin. It’s good too, but quite different. More like a chess game, and it doesn’t have any Indians in it. Both are based on the same Elmore Leonard short story.
Unfortunately, the ending of the current offering is nuts…
I’m going to tell you what it is. You won’t even believe it.
Crowe, the outlaw, executes everyone in his gang and then arrests himself and tosses himself onto the mail train to Yuma. That’s not what happened in 1957! I don’t know what happened at the end of the short story.
But I still think you should watch it.
