Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
November 10th, 2007
Classic film based on Truman Capote’s novel, starring Audrey Hepburn in a performance that seems written for her.
I haven’t read the book. I suspect that Holly Golightly (Hepburn) should be a hooker, not an elegant party girl who is given “$50 for the powder room” and has a recurring engagement visiting a mafia kingpin in prison. No matter. This is a frothy concoction that deserves all of its hype.
Hepburn is perfect, George Peppard is fine. I buy into Holly’s hats and foot-long cigarette holder and cat named Cat, and I love it when she sings Moon River. I even believe that she was married to Buddy Ebsen, looking pretty much the same as he did a few years later in Beverly Hillbillies.
I love this movie and I’m in love with Audrey Hepburn, circa 1961. There! My secret’s out. Unfortunately, Mickey Rooney is horrible as a sterotype of a Japanese man, all buck teeth and squinty eyes and duck-like squawking. His scenes are hard to take, and they are the only reason I don’t consider this a perfect movie.
