Two thumbs down
September 22nd, 2007
Here are some movies I started watching but didn’t finish.
Cannery Row (1982)
Based on the novel by John Steinbeck, starring Debra Winger and Nick Nolte. Narrated by John Houston. This has a rating of 60% at Rotten Tomatoes.
I didn’t get past the singing, dancing, homeless beach people. Unwatchable.
Texasville (1990)

This is the sequel to the excellent The Last Picture Show, with the same director, the same writer, and most of the same actors. But in the classic Picture Show, the characters are poignant and full of hesitant promise; here they are fat and stupid.
Rotten Tomatoes has this at 67%.
Glib dialogue, annoying situations. Stay away from this stinker.
Blood Diamond (2006)

This was just too bleak. Do I really need to see man’s inhumanity to man in such gory machete-swinging detail? Do I have to try to accept puffy Leo Dicaprio as the white hope come to save Africa from itself?
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 63%.
I gave up on it, but maybe I’ll give this one another chance sometime. When I’m not depressed enough.
