I Am Legend (2007)
April 8th, 2008
I think this, the third remake of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel of the same name, will become a Sci-Fi classic.
I especially think that, now that I’ve seen the DVD version with the alternate ending, which is much closer to the ending of the book. It is nowhere near as dumb and sappy as the theatre ending.
I have a couple of quibbles. For one, I don’t think the last man on earth, a serious scientist at that, would spend his days roaring recklessly through the streets of New York in a red sports car. But I’ll accept a bit of pandering to the lucrative youth demographic.
(Besides, that’s the way the 1971 remake begins too. That one, called The Omega Man, stars the late Charlton Heston (RIP). So far I’ve only watched the beginning of it and it’s just the same, right down to the red sports car. The other remake is 1964’s The Last Man on Earth, which I don’t have yet.)
This movie is serious and affecting, and scary too. Will Smith is fine. I also like the dog, and the (human) monsters are very scary and believable. You should see it if you haven’t. It will be a classic.
