In Bruges (2008)
June 29th, 2008

Funny black comedy starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes, Clemence Poesy, and Jordan Prentice. Two Irish killers are ordered to go to the medieval Belgian city of Bruges, and wait.
Farrell, of whom I’m not usually a fan - see The New World - is good here as a slightly dim, good-looking rounder, which I think is pretty much who he is in real life. Comedy should prove to be his niche.
The movie features a prominent dwarf role. I thought the actor was Peter Dinklage, who gets most of these kind of parts, but it turned out to be small Canadian actor Jordan Prentice. He does a good job.
The other casting surprise is over-the-top super-villain Harry, who when he finally appears turns out to be the guy from Schindler’s List. I could hardly believe it. Yes, Ralph Fiennes as a killer with a hair-trigger.
This movie is cleverly scripted, funny, and well-acted. It’s dark, so don’t watch it if you don’t want to see anybody get shot, especially not a little boy. But I think you’ll like seeing the sights of Bruges.
