Hard-core union busting in the coal fields of West Virginia. I liked this a lot.
As is his custom, director John Sayles appears as an anti-union preacher. Also features James Earl Jones, Chris Cooper (Adaptation) as the union organizer, and the ubiquitous David Strathairn (My Blueberry Nights) as the town cop.
If you ever listened to Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie songs about organizing and scabs and union maids and Pinkerton men, and didn’t quite get it, you should watch this movie. This is what those songs are about.
I think it’s great.
