This story of a man of honour and the end of an era in Japan has got everything. It’s a touching love story and a suspense thriller at the same time, featuring the world-weary last samurai and the first modern Japanese woman. It puts Tom Cruise’s last-samurai movie to deep shame. (And I kind of liked Cruise’s movie!)
One reviewer said it does for samurai flicks what Clint Eastwood’s “Unforgiven” did for westerns. I agree. I loved it.
