Curse of the Golden Flower (2006)

Directed by Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern, Hero, House of Flying Daggers). This is extremely lush. The plot is a complicated, turgid, pseudo-Shakespearean thing with rivalrous princes, incest, and noisy battles, but the look is everything - completely overdone eye candy.

I’m trying not to say ridiculous, wretched, excessive. OK I’ll say it! Don’t go to this, it will confuse and bore you and your eyes will get sore from trying to see everything at once while also reading the subtitles. In the end (and much sooner than that) you will find that it is all sound and fury, signifying nothing.
