Dreamgirls (2006)
January 26th, 2007

Dreamgirls is a musical about a singing group like Diana Ross and the Supremes. They are called Deena Jones and the Dreams. Subtle!
Either you like musicals or you don’t, and either you like the Supremes or you don’t. I got pretty sick of all the glossy production numbers about halfway through it. In my opinion the Supremes don’t represent a high point in American music.
Former American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson saves this movie. Toothy and overweight, she blows the more svelte and famous Beyoncé Knowles off the stage in a show of star power that is almost shocking. Hudson is the real thing. Only her performance makes this tepid film worth seeing.
Hudson won a Golden Globe for best supporting actress for her performance, and she is an Oscar contender. I say just mail it to her and skip the drama.
