Michael Clayton (2007)

This isn’t the kind of movie I like much. It’s too grown-up. It isn’t quirky, and it has no whimsy.

It’s sort of like the anti-Juno.

George Clooney does the whole thing with a pained look on his face, which is what he normally does instead of acting. Even so he’s nominated for an Oscar. Go figure.

Clooney’s character, a single parent with big debts and a gambling habit, is good with his young son. Other than that the movie isn’t much fun. I don’t think you should go see it unless you specially like courtroom dramas and you don’t like to have a good time. Not recommended at all!

I notice I’m always mistaken at Oscar time. The ones I think are the boring clunkers about guys in suits shooting each other always get all the awards. So this piece of junk will probably be Best Picture and Clooney is a shoe-in for Best Actor. You can bet on it!

I like your reviews very much and often use your recommendations. In return I want to recommend a movie that I saw recently and liked a lot – “A Cruel Romance”, 1984, (also known as “Ruthless Romance”) based on the play “The Dowerless Girl” by nineteenth-century Russian playwright Alexander Ostrovsky. Great cast. Convincingly realistic and beautifully poetic at the same time.
