Serenity (2005)

serenityimdb.jpg Here is my guilty secret: I own the entire series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on DVD.

“Serenity” is based on Joss Whedon’s short-lived TV series Firefly, which came after Angel. Whedon is the creator of the Buffyverse. I put it on because I wanted to watch something fast and not too arty, with lots of smart-alecky dialogue. I wanted to see things blown up in space.

I love those Asian and European films but the subtitles can be hard work. Now and then I just want to go back to my teenage sci-fi roots. And I do like Joss Whedon.

As you might expect Serenity has an ensemble cast, a confusing plot, some intriguing characters and visuals, and lots of smart-ass dialogue, and it ends with a big shoot-em-up which the good guys win. Enough said.

Not specially recommended unless you own every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Then it is a must-see movie. Here’s the best character, River, played by Summer Glau:
