The Deer Hunter (1978)

TVO is showing “The Deer Hunter” tonight. I have it in my collection so I’m not going to watch it right now, but I love being reminded of it.

This is one of the greatest movies I’ve ever seen, and one of the most harrowing. I could hardly stand to watch it when I first saw it in a theatre. It left me shaking.

Great, great performances by Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken. Walken is so young here! And his performance is devastating.

The only other movie that has ever affected me so strongly, with as much horror and revulsion, was “Deliverance,” which I walked out of when I first saw it. I didn’t walk out of “The Deer Hunter,” but I was just about paralyzed by it.

This is a must-see movie.
