Venus (2006)
April 2nd, 2007

I like everything about this movie.
Peter O’Toole’s brilliant performance

The friendship of elderly men

Vanessa Redgrave as O’Toole’s wife

An old man’s love for a girl

The movie’s reverence for art

and for theatre.

The stunning, painterly cinematography.

This is my favourite movie of the moment. It’s brilliant, funny, sad and moving.
Here’s O’Toole and the girl in a limo. O’Toole’s character is pretty much himself, only more so - a famous actor who nowadays gets work as a corpse.

The girl lets him kiss her shoulder and smell her neck. When she thinks he’s dying she tries to revive him by showing him her breasts. In exchange he buys her things like earrings and tattoos.

Creepy? Yeah kind of, but I think this movie gets away with it. It’s surprising and great. Don’t miss it!
