Wild Strawberries (1957)
September 22nd, 2007
This, the second Bergman film I have seen, is nothing like The Seventh Seal. It’s a long, brooding psychological study of an elderly man looking back on his life.
Bergman is considered highly intellectual and sophisticated, but this is a little like Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, as the old man is allowed to watch himself in humiliating scenes from his earlier life. (No ghosts though.)
It’s good. Bergman isn’t scary at all, and the film is thought-provoking and emotionally rewarding. You should watch it.
